The process of skim coating is one of the essential finishing steps in a construction project. It involves applying a thin, even layer of joint compound or drywall mud to a surface to create a smooth, seamless finish.
Right now, skim coating is used as a base coat for paints or as a finishing coat for walls and ceilings. Typically, a skim coat is applied in two layers with an average thickness of 0.5 to 2 millimeters.
Skim coats can be either gray or white, depending on the type of cement used in different regions. Some areas even use cement-free skim coats.

Step-by-Step Guide to Skim Coating Walls
So, you think you’re all set to start? Great! Now, follow these steps to begin skim-coating your walls.
1. Prepare your Work Area for Skim Coating
First things first: let’s prep those walls. This is a crucial step that will make the whole process much easier. Start by cleaning your walls to remove any dirt, dust, or loose paint. You can also smooth out rough spots with 120-grit sandpaper.
During this step, ensure you’ve covered your furniture, items, and other areas in your room that will not be skim-coated.
2. Prime the Surface
Here’s an important tip: before applying a skim coat, give your walls a coat of primer. This will create a smooth base and help the skim coat adhere better. You may need to apply two coats of primer to seal any loose drywall paper.
3. Mix the Drywall Compound
Time to mix up your coat! Follow the instructions on the drywall compound bucket, but we suggest using a little less water. You want the mixture to be about as thick as yogurt. This consistency makes the coat stickier and easier to apply.
4. Apply the First Coat
Now, let’s get rolling (literally)! Using a roller, apply the first coat of mud to your wall. Press the roller firmly against the wall to squeeze out any air bubbles.
The tricky part is the drying process. Remember, you’re racing against the clock. We suggest working in smaller sections to prevent the mud from drying out before you finish.
Also, try to keep the layer of mud consistent across the entire area. Even though you’ll be scraping some off later, uneven thickness can lead to inconsistent drying, making the process more difficult.
5. Skim Coat the First Section
Using a 12-inch drywall knife or a trowel, smooth out the edges of the joint compound to blend it seamlessly with the existing surface.
One technique to perfect this step is to apply a little more pressure on the left side of the knife. This will help smooth out any imperfections on that side while leaving a slight ridge on the right.
6. Sand and Dry
Allow the first coat to dry completely before proceeding to this step. It should dry within an hour or two.
Once dry, use 220-grit sandpaper to smooth the surface. This will help create an even finish.
7. Apply the Second Coat then Sand
Time for round two! Apply a second thin coat of joint compound, overlapping the first coat. Feather the edges as you did before. Once it dries, sand it. Basically, just repeat the previous steps.
8. Apply A Third Coat When Needed
Happy with the finish? If so, you can skip this step. However, if the walls are still uneven, apply a third coat of joint compound. Again, scrape the edges and sand it. Just follow the same steps as before.
9. Prime and Paint

Allow the primer to dry completely. If desired, you can then paint the surface with your chosen color.
